On 27 February 2024, Arden & GEM hosted an engaging and passionate webinar focused on the NHS Green Plan.
The discussion topics covered supporting health and wellbeing, improving population health and how carbon efficiencies can support these through the wider health inequalities lens.
The event was chaired by Terry Huff, Productivity Lead at Arden & GEM, who was joined by:
-
Stella Cockerill, Engagement & Sustainability Manager from the Greener NHS East of England team, who gave a presentation on ‘Change the way you see healthcare to change the healthcare you see’. Stella provided an introduction to what a sustainable healthcare system is, and the issues and opportunities within the current landscape.
-
Andrew Urquhart, Sustainability Lead for Suffolk and North East Essex ICB, discussed his experiences in ‘Embedding sustainability in business as usual’. Andrew highlighted what tools we can use to help us in ensuring that each decision considers environmental impact as well as financial and wider social value throughout the strategic commissioning process from service design to contract management. Designing sustainability into plans, policies and strategies at every stage.
-
Alison Tonge, Executive Director of Strategy, Planning and Innovation at Arden & GEM, who provided an overarching lens of integrated goal setting, innovation and measurement, discussing the importance of taking existing transformation plans for pathways and services and stretching these goals to drive decarbonisation, reduce waste as well as triple value improvement.
-
Becky Jones, Social Value Specialist at Arden & GEM, who provided teaching and guidance on ‘Why does social value matter and how Arden & GEM can help you with your approach’. Becky gave an educational overview of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and how it recognises that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
Through these presentations and conversations we introduced ideas and concepts for developing innovative solutions and collaborations that can energise and significantly improve the sustainability of the health and care sector. The speakers looked at social value through a strategic commissioning lens and how each strategic decision made must consider environmental impact. You can access the full event slide deck here.
A large number of attendees from across the health and care sector attended the webinar. The session sparked a meaningful and thought-provoking discussion and an opportunity for new approaches and relationships to develop within the NHS.
