Strategic Workforce Planning

The collective ambition for greater integration and better care means that strategic workforce management will be integral to NHS organisations, health systems and the wider public sector delivering the vision for ‘one workforce’.

Arden & GEM’s Strategic Workforce Planning service is designed to help leaders across the NHS with their mandated responsibility to deliver 10 outcome-based people functions as well as supporting the ongoing journey towards integrated care. We provide data driven, digitally enabled strategic workforce services that empower systems and organisations to meet future population and place-based needs, including working across organisational boundaries. Our end-to end Workforce Planning Services also deliver additional organisational development (OD) and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) interventions to support system change and improve service resilience.

Our service can be a ‘one-off’ diagnostic and action planning intervention, or we can provide longer-term partnerships producing monthly integrated dashboards and workforce deep-dives into problem areas. We deliver a range of Strategic Workforce Planning services that can be drawn upon to support your individual challenges. These include:

  • Workforce profiling to deliver transparency and understanding in areas including Agenda for Change banding, age, qualifications, skills and ethnic breakdown etc
  • Workforce analysis to understand how current resources map against population needs - to ensure your people are in the most effective locations
  • Workforce strategy to ensure health systems have the required number of people, with the right skills and in the right locations to deliver their vision for improving population health
  • Whole system workforce reporting approaches that integrate data from primary care, local authority and non-statutory organisations
  • Baselining current staffing pulling information from multiple systems across organisations and systems; creating workforce dashboards which are built to support the NHS People Plan and People Promise
  • Scenario modelling the profile of your future workforce, for example retirement forecasting, pathway and service redesign based on current activity and future needs
  • Gap analysis using the NHS Six-step methodology for strategic workforce planning to help you understand and plan for existing or anticipated gaps in the workforce.
