NHS Arden & GEM’s Strategy, Innovation and Planning team has been successfully shortlisted at the HSJ Partnership Awards 2025 in the ‘Environmental Sustainability Project of the Year’ category.

The shortlisted project is a collaboration between NHS Arden & GEM, the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition, Mitie and Anaplan to support the NHS to achieve its net zero target and improve sustainability by integrating carbon intelligence into planning across health and care pathways.

Commenting on the shortlist announcement, Olu Akinremi, Senior Transformation Programme Lead at NHS Arden & GEM said: “I am delighted that our collaborative work on the Net Zero Health and Care Pathway Tool has been recognised by the HSJ Partnership Awards. This achievement reflects the power of partnerships, innovation and shared purpose in addressing the NHS’s net zero objectives.

“This groundbreaking tool integrates carbon intelligence into healthcare planning, empowering NHS organisations to reduce emissions while delivering high-quality patient care. By aligning with the NHS’s commitment to achieve net zero for direct emissions by 2040 and indirect emissions by 2045, we are driving tangible progress in decarbonising care pathways.

“Together with the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition, Mitie and Anaplan, we have demonstrated how strategic collaboration and cutting-edge technology can drive sustainability and deliver measurable impact in healthcare and beyond."

The collaboratively developed tool calculates carbon intensity per pound spent and per patient, enabling the integration of decarbonisation strategies into care pathway planning. The tool also goes beyond decarbonisation, addressing multi-goal objectives such as population health outcomes, clinical quality, efficiency, value and social value, ensuring that sustainability efforts are aligned with overall healthcare priorities.

Now in their eighth year, the HSJ Partnership Awards have become the most recognised and respected mark of the strongest relationships between suppliers and the NHS. Following the thorough judging process, NHS Arden & GEM was included in 180+ organisations, projects and individuals that made the final shortlist amid 280+ entries logged for the 2025 awards programme.

Shortlisted projects and organisations will present their entries to a judging panel in February before the winners are announced at the official awards ceremony being held at Evolution London on 20 March 2025.

Anyone wanting to find out more about the tool can register for the upcoming webinar ‘Decarbonising care pathways: aligning sustainability with improved patient outcomes’. Taking place on Thursday 12 December between 12.30 and 13:00, this session will look at the challenge of reducing the NHS carbon emissions and how care pathway transformation can be the critical route to achieving this.
