Learning disabilities and autism project shortlisted for national Patient Safety Award

NHS Arden & GEM CSU has been shortlisted for a prestigious Patient Safety Award for its work in transforming care for people with complex learning disabilities and autism, in partnership with lead commissioner, Coventry and Rugby CCG.

Reaching the finals in the new Learning Disability category, the ‘Transforming Care’ project involved a radical rethink of how services for people with complex learning disabilities and autism were being delivered. We worked collaboratively with four CCGs, three local authorities, providers and service-users, to completely transform the service and improve care. The new community-based model of care is significantly improving outcomes for service-users, reducing inpatient admissions and length of stays in hospital.

“We are delighted to have reached the finals of the Patient Safety Awards. These awards shine a spotlight on outcomes for patients and this project has radically reshaped care and support, so that services are designed around individual needs. Our approach has been one of true partnership and collaboration which has focused on putting patients at the heart of problem solving and decision making.

“While there are many challenges ahead in terms of widely embedding new approaches, being shortlisted for this award is a fantastic achievement and recognition for the positive work that’s been achieved so far.”

Sally Eason, Transformation Partner at Arden & GEM

The Patient Safety Awards recognise outstanding practice within the NHS and independent healthcare organisations. Arden & GEM will take part in a presentation to the judging panel in May, and the winners of all categories will be announced at an award ceremony on Tuesday 4th July in Manchester.
