Helping families to stay healthy this winter with Flo the friendly dragon

As part of a campaign to help people to stay well this winter, Arden & GEM’s engagement, communications and marketing team is introducing families across the West Midlands to Flo the friendly dragon.

Flo will be helping local NHS organisations, including Sandwell and West Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), to spread self-care messages to families – in particular parents of young children aged 0-5.

A fun animation featuring the dragon has been created to help provide parents and children with top tips and important advice to keep well through the cold winter months such as how to tell the difference between a cold and flu, effective home remedies for treating colds and how to choose the right health service.

Flo will also be taking part in a series of winter roadshows at community venues, with Flo activity books available to encourage children to listen to Flo’s advice and give parents ideas for healthy warming winter recipes.

Dr Nick Harding, Chair of NHS Sandwell and West Birmingham CCG, said: "If you’ve got a cold, the time can really drag on but all you can do is rest and keep your fluids up. Most people will get at least two colds a year, often lasting up to two weeks and being worse at about five days in. There isn’t anything a GP can do for a cold and, if you watch the animation, you’ll see wizards can’t help either."

The CSU team will also be helping people to stay healthy by:

  • Supporting them to choose the right health service through a ‘Play Your Care Right’ gameshow
  • Encouraging eligible people to have their free flu jab and receive vital protection
  • Asking the public to keep an eye on elderly and vulnerable neighbours.
