Arden & GEM appoints Chief Operating Officer in Essex

Arden & GEM CSU has appointed Anthony Upshall to the new role of Chief Operating Officer (COO) for its business in Essex and will be taking up his post on 1 June.  As COO, Anthony will steer the mobilisation of our new contracts for seven Essex clinical commissioning groups (CCGs). These go live on 1 July and cover IT, GPIT, HR, Business Intelligence and Financial Services.

Anthony brings considerable NHS and IT experience to the role. For the past 20 years he has worked in a range of NHS organisations across the country delivering major IT projects and programmes. Before joining the NHS, he worked for the Metropolitan Police.

Anthony is currently employed by NHS England as Head of Digital Technology in the East.  However, he is already well known to the CCGs in Essex having been seconded to the current supplier, NELCSU, to manage the major cyber incident that hit the NHS in May 2017.

The CCGs were so impressed with the way Anthony managed the IT crisis, that they asked NEL to retain his services to manage the transition to Arden & GEM..

Anthony is expected to take up his new role within the next few weeks. Meanwhile, Jason Bloomfield, Associate Director of Financial Services with Arden & GEM will continue as Interim COO working with the CCGs and NELCSU to ensure the effective mobilisation of CCG services.

Anthony said: ‘After many years working in IT, I am excited to be taking on a wider business role. I have already developed strong working relationships with Arden & GEM’s new CCG customers in Essex and am looking forward to supporting them in meeting the challenges of the rapidly changing health and social care landscape.’

John Parkes, Managing Director of Arden & GEM CSU said: ‘I am delighted that Anthony has agreed to join Arden & GEM as our COO in Essex. His skills, experience and his understanding of the challenges facing healthcare Essex will be major assets in developing our services in the region.’
